Double yoi! Can you believe it's been 19 years since the late, great Myron Cope announced his retirement after more than three decades serving as the Voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Today, we give a oneBURGH salute to the one-and-only Myron Cope.

The Voice of Steel

Cope's career as the Steelers' color commentator spanned an incredible 35 years, making him a constant presence in the lives of Pittsburghers. Those of us of a certain age remember turning down the television and cranking up the radio to listen to his distinctive, high-pitched voice.

That, coupled with his infectious enthusiasm, brought a unique flavor to Steelers broadcasts. He wasn't just calling the game; he was living it, breathing it, and sharing that passion with every fan tuned in.

More Than a Broadcaster

Cope's legacy, however, goes far beyond the broadcast booth.

In 1975, he masterminded one of the most iconic symbols in sports history – The Terrible Towel. Cope's idea for fans to wave yellow dish towels during a playoff game against the Baltimore Colts not only fired up the crowd but became a rallying symbol for Steelers Nation ever since.

The Terrible Towel, beyond the team spirit, also raised significant funds for charity through sales.

A Burgh Original

Cope's love for Pittsburgh - and its quirks - was undeniable. He wasn't afraid to embrace the city's unique dialect, using terms like yinz and dahntahn that resonated deeply with local fans. Cope certainly had his catchphrases, too. If you've ever heard or used the term "The Cincinatti Bungles," then you have Myron to thank. He's also the one who dubbed Jerome Bettis "The Bus" and Chuck Noll "Emperor Chaz."

Remembering Myron with a Smile

Here's a taste of some of Cope's most famous lines:

  • "There are two seasons in Pittsburgh: Terrible Towel waving season and shoveling season."
  • "The Immaculate Reception, a play whispered from the heavens!"
  • "It's a glorious day in Steeler Nation!"
